Fear of losing the July 14 governorship election in Edo State is said to have sparked panic in the Peoples Democratic Party.
According to party sources, the national leadership of the party is not sure that its candidate, Maj.-Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (retd), can defeat Governor Adams Oshiomhole, the Action Congress of Nigeria’s candidate for the poll.
A member of the National Working Committee of the PDP said the party was disturbed by behaviour of some notable members of the party in the state.
He said the PDP would hold another grand rally in Benin City to mobilise support for Airhiavbere.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said, “This is the first time that PDP leaders at the national level will be going to a state to hold a grand rally twice to support its governorship candidate in any election.
“You remember that about two weeks ago, the leaders of the party were led by Vice-President Namadi Sambo to Edo to participate in the Edo South Senatorial District governorship campaign rally.
“We are worried because of the support some of our members are giving to the ACN.”
During the last rally, Sambo, who is the chairman of the National Campaign Committee of the PDP for election, said the poll would be another significant milestone in the administration’s transparent elections policy.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, told our correspondent on the telephone that the party would aim to win the election.
He said the state, as the only one being governed by the opposition party in the South-South region must return to the PDP.
