There was pandemonium yesterday morning in Yenagoa, when uniformed Policemen attached to the Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief Tiwei Tmipa Orunimighe clashed with Officials of the Bayelsa State Environmental Sanitation Authority led by its Chairman, Mr. Oboku Offorji at the Tombia junction.Henry-Seriake-Dickson

Checks indicated that the crisis sparked off over argument on the barricade mounted at the Tombia junction to ensure residents of the state adhered to the restriction of movement order on sanitation days.

Offorji accused the APC chieftains and their supporters of deliberately flouting the restriction order in line with the Sanitation Law, and attempted to disrupt the exercise with security personnel attached to its Chairman in the state by shooting sporadically into the air.

The APC leadership in the state has however dismissed the allegation, noting that officials of the state government were whipping up sentiments to discredit the APC.

Offorji in a press briefing in his office, accused Orunimighe and chieftains of the party of ordering security personnel attached to them to shot sporadically in the air, and forcibly removed the barricade in their attempt to disrupt the sanitation exercise.

According to him, many people at the Tombia junction were terrified as the gunshots that rented the air were as if the area has been turned into a war zone.

He disclosed that the agency has concluded plans to lodge a formal petition to the police authorities to effect the arrest of the policemen used by the politicians to undermine the peace in the state.

“It is quite unfortunate that a political party with its leadership at the centre, that has been preaching against impunity is allowing its supporters at the state level to indulge in impunity and lawlessness of the highest order. It was a sad situation. Nobody could go close. I want to make it clear that our experience today as a government agency was a bitter one.

Reacting to the allegation, the media adviser to Orunmighe, Mr. Alawoei Opokume dismissed the claims of Offorji, noting that since the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) now sees the APC as its greatest threat, they want to do everything within its powers to discredit the party.

Similarly, the Publicity Secretary of the APC in the state, Mr. Fortune Paniebi, who said he was not aware of any incident like that, said Bayelsans should not take the claims of Offorji serious.
