The Theater Command of Operation Lafiya Dole of the Nigerian Army on Friday alerted Borno residents on a planned attack by Boko Haram terrorists using beggars and other strategies.

The Media Coordinator of the Theater, Col. Mustapha Anka, made this known in a statement in Maiduguri.Anka said, “the attention of the Operation Lafiya Dole has been drawn to a terrorists’ intention to use beggars to cause mayhem in the state.

“Under the plan, concealed explosives in bundles of firewood are to be placed in crowded and strategic areas of Maiduguri and environs to cause havoc.”

He said that the terrorists had also devised a new means of attracting the public by shouting Boko Haram to create panic.

“Additionally, the general public should be weary of a terrorists plan to deceive the public by way of shouting `Boko Haram’ to create panic in order to lure unsuspecting public for maximum casualty while detonating their bombs during and after the new year celebrations,” Anka said. Read More →

Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhamadu Buhari, has congratulated the mother of the first baby born at Asokoro District Hospital Abuja in the year and urged women to raise children with good morals.aisha-buhari

The president’s wife also honoured the baby on Friday as part of the ceremonial celebration to mark the New Year.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the baby, a female named Destiny Agu was born at 12:12 a.m. to the family of Mr and Mrs Uche Agu and weighed 3.7kg.

Represented by the wife of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Mrs Gimbiya Dogara, Buhari said mothers had vital roles in the upbringing of children that made for a better society.

The Edo Government on Tuesday repealed the Act establishing the Customary Court of Appeal in the state.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who signed the Amendment Bill into law, said that the Customary Court of Appeal had ceased to exist in the state.Oshiomhole

He said that with the development, the judges in the court were automatically transferred to the State High Court, thereby increasing the number of the State high court judges from 24 to 30.

He explained that more judges were needed in the high courts for quick dispensation of justice.

The governor noted that it was unthinkable that not less than 6000 cases were hitherto pending before only 24 judges of the high court.

Oshiomole said that the new high court judges would now have the opportunity of hearing diverse cases and not just the appeals from the customary courts and the area courts.

He noted that, although, the law requires that the judges be sworn-in, they would retain their seniority. Read More →

The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Solomon Arase has promised to carry out a professional investigation into the recent clash between the Nigerian Army and the Shiite Islamic group in Zaria, Kaduna state.

It stated that Arase gave the promise when a delegation of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, led by its Secretary-General Prof. Ishaq Oloyede visited him.

He said that the Police and other security agencies were conscious of the citizens’ fundamental rights and would protect them.

Arase appealed to the Islamic body to use its platform to caution all groups in the country against encroaching on other citizens’ rights.

Says 2016 is year of change

ABUJA — Taking note of the hard times in the land, President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, said becoming president had not removed him from the pains of the people, promising that 2016 would be the beginning of the change in the country.

While noting what he claimed as unforeseen circumstances and distractions since his inauguration, President Buhari reassured Nigerians that the difficulties were temporary, saying he was determined to fulfil the promises he made prior to the election.
