Workers of the Nigerian Railway Corporat i o n , NRC, have charged the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to continue with the ongoing asset rehabilitation and modernisation of the rail subsector. The workers, speaking through President-General, Nigerian Union of Railway Workers, NURW, Comrade Raphael Okoro, stated that for an economy like Nigeria to reach its developmental goal and stronger integration, it required a functional and effective rail transport system.
Okoro further tasked Buhari to critically look at the welfare of the workers, who he said were poorly remunerated by government, stressing that despite several billions of naira spent on asset rehabilitation and reequipping of Nigerian Railways, such did not have any impact on the welfare and livability of the workers.
He added, “The workers who put all these multi-billion equipment to use still grope in poor remuneration and welfare. Railway workers’ welfare and remuneration should be of great concern to the presidentelect so as to attract skilled and employable Nigerians to the industry and eventually make railway the highest employer of labour it used to be in its hey days.
