BY NOSIKE OGBUENYI:
Forces opposed to the presidency of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has stepped up its plot to weaken the foremost pro-constitution lobby organ at the National Assembly, the National Interest Group (NIG). A top ranking senator, who is a member of the NIG told Daily Sun yesterday in Abuja that the group which has been in the forefront of advocacy for the use of constitutional and pan-Nigeria approach in resolving the lingering power vacuum occasioned by President Umaru Yar’Adua’s long absence has come under surreptitious campaign of calumny by the cabal which had been profiting from the power vacuum. He said the cabal has resorted to subtle blackmail, rumour peddling and perpetration of outright falsehood against the national lobby group all in a bid to discredit it in the eye of Nigerians.
Concerning the plot by the cabal to discredit the NIG, member of the group who hails from one of the North eastern states fingered the two ‘connected’ sons-in-law of President Yar’Adua, together with few Yar’Adua appointees in the FEC as the masterminds of the campaign of calumny against leading lights within the NIG.
He said the strategies of the cabal to destabilize the NIG include spreading rumours in the northern states that its members from that part of the country were plotting against a fellow Muslim president and were working against the interest of the North by supporting the emergence of Vice President Goodluck Jonathan as acting president.
The concerned NIG member said those bent on discrediting the group had even gone to the extent of sponsoring false media reports using the name of the NIG. He said such speculative reports were intended to portray the group as unfeeling and unsympathetic to ailing President Yar’Adua.
Meanwhile, the pro-Yar’Adua group has intensified its efforts to mobilize many northern lawmakers and their crop of allies from the South in the Senate and the House of Representatives in a bid to stall the removal of Yar’Adua as president either via outright impeachment or on grounds of incapacitation.
Those fingered as the arrowheads of this move in the National Assembly are the Chairman of Northern Senators Forum, Senator Umaru Dahiru (Sokoto South) and former Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abdul Ningi (Ningi/Warji) Bauchi State.
