Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Lars Lagerback, yesterday, said he has found a replacement for Daniel Shittu in the central defence as he insisted that Shittu, Obinna Nwaneri are not sure candidates for his World Cup team.
The Swede said after watching the Eagles’ Team B training session at the Fifa Goal Project that he was impressed with the performance of Michael Odibe in the Italian Serie A league.
“This is what I am already looking forward to, and I am working towards securing a new player for the team’s central defence. I saw him in Europe and was surprised that most Nigerians know very little about him,” Lars Lagerback said.
The Swede said the 21-year-old Odibe of AC Siena in the Italian Serie A, is a young and good defender.
He praised Russia-based Eagles forward, Osaze Odemwingie, as one player who has continued to impress him and whom he would love to continue to have in his team.
“Osaze is very good, and I am sure we will use him very well. Defender Chibuzor Okonkwo is another player I want to see in the team, and I have seen him here today (yesterday) in training with the Team B,” he said.
Lagerback, who had earlier addressed the Team B promised to join the team in
Kano for their match against Niger Republic and said he was hopeful of having an opportunity to look again at some of the players.
He later had a meeting with the Eagles’ backroom staff such as the physiotherapist, doctor, co_ordinator, secretary and assistant coaches Daniel Amokachi and Alloy Agu.
Senior assistant coach Austine Eguavoen as well as team media officer Peterside Idah were however not part of the meeting as they were said to be awaiting the Swede in South Africa .
Lagerback was however scheduled to leave Abuja later last night for South Africa where he would assess the team’s training camp for the World Cup finals. He is due to return on Friday, before proceeding to Kano for the Team B match with Niger Republic on Sunday.
