THE Pillar of Sports in Nigeria, Dr. Orii Uzor Kalu, yesterday called on the Super Eagles foreign technical adviser, Lars Lagerback, to ensure he calls some progressive young blood to the nationalteam so as to record a good outing at the South Africa 2010 World Cup finals.
He stated that people, such as Italy-based Stephano Chuka Okaka, Golden Eaglets captain, Fortune Chukwudi, Keneth Omeruo and England-based Victor Moses, have the potential of boosting the country s World Cup campaign, adding that,Kalu advised the Swede coach not to concentrate solely on picking players from the European leagues, but look back at some of the country’s players plying their trade in West African coast.
“There so many unknown stars all over the West Coast. Nobody reckoned with Ibrahim Sunday, Sam Abouo Dominique, Seyi Adebayor and Michael Essien until they did well with other nations. Some say Samuel Eto’o is our kinsman. I know former Indomitable Lion Victor Akem Ndip speaks Igbo language.
“Lagerback could rely on our Ogbomosho and Bendel, Ohafia brothers to know more about Nigerians playing from Yaounde to Bobo Diallousso,” Kalu pointed out.
The Pillar of Sports also urged the Swede coach to go after sensational Manchester City rightback, Nedum Onuoha, to beef up the World Cup team.
Kalu believes Warri-born player deserves a place in the new team despite previous allegiance to England juniors.
“Onuoha is doing so well in Man City,” he said.
“The boy is young, tough and mobile. With him on the right and Taye Taiwo on the left, the job of feeding the attackers is half done.”
The former Abia State Governor noted that Lagerback should continue in his search for exceptional players for the national team.
