Japan has offered to provide a non-project grant aid for the provision of Japanese disaster reduction equipment to the tune of N895 million.
The Minister of National Planning and Deputy Chairman of the National planning Commission, Dr Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman disclosed this when he hosted the Charge D’Affairs of Japan, Mr Masaya Otsuka to the signing ceremony of the Exchange of note in Abuja.
The grant would be utilized for the procurement of national disaster reduction equipment made by the Japanese enterprise and the national emergency agency to make Nigeria more resilient in disaster reduction.
Otsuka said: “Based on Japan’s experience, there are a lot of things that can be done by Japan in disaster management and Japan would spare no effort in providing necessary assistance and cooperation in accordance with the guiding principles of ownership and partnership.”
The minister said: “Nigeria has experienced various degrees of disaster and in most cases, whether natural or man-made, our response level may not have matched the magnitude of the negative occurrences.”
