GUNMEN at the weekend trailed a police officer to a community mosque and shot him dead in Dala ward of Maiduguri metropolis of Borno State at 8.00 p.m.
An eyewitness said that he saw two people walking on foot at 7.45 p.m. towards the mosque, asking for one police officer. But he could not tell the name of the policeman.
He added that men of the military Joint Task Force (JTF) rushed to the scene the following morning and carried away his body to the State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, while the area has been condoned.
Confirming the incident yesterday in a telephone interview in Maiduguri, spokesman of the Borno State Police Command, Gideon Jibrin, said two suspected members of Boko Haram ambushed a police officer in the Dala area.
He said the reports of the police area commander indicated that the gunmen opened fire at the officer immediately he was leaving the mosque at about 8.00 p.m.
