NAN reports that the victims were those whose houses and property were destroyed due to the reclamation of the lost land to gully erosion.
Chris Abode, the Officer in Charge of Social Livelihood of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, presented cheques to the beneficiaries in Auchi.
“The Edo Government is to spend the sum of N490million as compensation to residents whose property are affected in the recovery of the Auchi gully site.
“The beneficiaries are those whose houses and farmlands will be affected in the course of reclaiming the areas taken over by the gully erosion in Auchi community,” he said.
Abode disclosed that 121 persons would benefit from the exercise, adding that the beneficiaries were screened and verified before being given their cheques.
“We have already mapped out the houses and property to be affected during the visibility study of the area in the resettlement action plan.
“Hence the beneficiaries’ are paid on the basis of the value of their property,” he said.
NAN also reports that some of the beneficiaries commended the state government for the gesture.
