The Under-23 team, has received accolades from former national team handler, James Peter, for its qualification for the African Championship finals coming up later in the year in Senegal.
Peter said with the performance in the reverse match pairing of the Olympic qualifier against Congo in Brazzaville the coach Samson Siasia boys demonstrated that they are future Eagles.
“I was not privileged to watch them at training, but I was confident that they will scale through going by their performance in the first leg in Port Harcourt.
Peter who took the country’s Under-23 team to Egypt in the 1991 All Africa Games praised Siasia for not betraying the nation.
He advised the coach not to invite more foreign based players rather, to concentrate on the home based players.
Peter recollected that when he won the bronze medal in 1991, he did it with virtually home based players, like Dosu Joseph, Andrew Aikhomugbe, Patrick Mancha, Bobolayefa Edom, Tijani Babangida, Steven Musa, Emmanuel Amuneke and John Zaki.
“In that year, we lost to Cameroun in the semi final 0-1 and went to beat Uganda 8-0 to win the bronze medal”, he pointed out.
That is why I am asking him to stick to the home based players so that they can train together before the finals in Senegal,” he added.
The coach hopes the team would use the All Africa Games slated for Congo zwnext month to send warning signals to their opponents in the African Youth Championship later in the year in Senegal.
