In 2015, at least 1,968 persons were identified as victims of flood disaster in Akwa Ibom State, with more than N97 million paid as compensation to them, the State Deputy Governor, Mr. Moses Ekpo, has disclosed.
He made the disclosure when the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) donated some relief materials to flood victims in the state on the eve of the new year.
Flood, he said, wreaked havoc in some parts of the state especially in the months of May, June and July, lauding NEMA for effective collaboration with the state to give succor to the victims of the disaster saying the latest compensation were for victims in Uyo and Eket local government areas of the state
“As would be readily recalled, this year’s floods specifically wreaked havoc of monumental proportions in several communities of Eket local government area resulting in 1,679 disaster victims who were assessed for financial relief of N50, 000.00 per victim.
“Similarly, in Uyo metropolis, 289 victims were heavily impacted by the scourge, thus bringing to a total of 1,968 victims with a total financial approval of N97, 850,000.00”, the Deputy Governor explained.
